The city is electrified, the air thick with anticipation: a landmark exhibition is about to open at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art – a retrospective celebrating the work of legendary designer, Yves Saint Laurent. It is a historic moment. A celebration not just of fashion, but of a visionary. The first time a living couturier is bestowed this honour. Orchestrated by Diana Vreeland, the exhibition comprises a carefully curated selection of 150 pieces. Unveiled this evening, a glamorous gala fills the museum. The black-tie dinner-dance draws a dazzling array of guests, from fashion insiders like Bill Blass and Jacqueline de Ribes to socialites such as Tatiana Liberman and Marie-Hélène de Rothschild, as well as artists like Louise Nevelson – each an icon in their own right, awaiting a night unlike any other.
